Triathlon Packing List: Everything You Need on Race Day
There’s nothing quite like the energy of race morning. The nervous excitement. The early alarms. The quiet setup in transition before the chaos begins. Whether it’s your first sprint triathlon or your tenth IRONMAN, one thing is always true: preparation matters!
At WYN republic, we know race day starts long before the cannon goes off. The right gear, the right setup, and the right routine can make all the difference in how confident and comfortable you feel throughout the day.
To help guide you through it, we asked both sides of the WYN community:
- WYN Pro Triathlete Steph Clutterbuck
- WYN Team Member Kelly, an age-group athlete who recently completed her first IRONMAN 70.3
From pro-level race preparation to real first-race lessons, here’s your complete triathlon packing list and the small details that can make a big difference!

The Small Things That Matter Most
Sometimes the biggest race-day difference comes from the smallest item in your bag.
For Steph, it’s sodium.
“Salt tabs! Small, easy to carry and an absolute necessity for me out on the course!”
As an athlete managing Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), hydration and sodium are critical parts of Steph’s race strategy.
“An IRONMAN is such a long day that if you don’t look after yourself, you WILL pay the price.”
For Kelly, it was vaseline.
“Wetsuit chafing is a whole different animal, so I’m really glad I lubed up like the peanut butter baby.”
Race day has a way of exposing every little detail, which is why testing your setup before race day is one of the best things you can do.

Why Your Tri Suit Matters More Than You Think
A good tri suit isn’t just about speed — it’s about comfort, confidence, and being able to move through every discipline without distraction.
Steph put it perfectly:
“Honestly, and I’m not just saying this, the tri suit is one of the biggest wins for me. Comfort, cooling, and just feeling like an absolute star get you in the right space on race day.”
At WYN, every tri suit is designed to support athletes through long training days and even longer race days. From aerodynamic fabrics to storage solutions and chamois comfort, the details matter.
Steph’s personal checklist?
- Flexibility through the shoulders
- Comfortable zipper construction
- A chamois that feels “just right”
- Necklines that won’t rub for hours
- Designs that tell a story
“My suit is my way to tell my story and represent out on the race course.”
Whether you’re racing in the CdA Aero Tri Suit, Hi Velocity X Tri Suit, or LUCEO+ Aero Tri Suit, race-day comfort can completely change your experience!

How to Organize Transition Like a Pro
Transition can feel chaotic, especially during your first race. But the simpler your setup, the smoother your day becomes.
Steph’s strategy?
“Put everything in bags. Especially for T2.”
She keeps her setup streamlined so she can get moving quickly and organize herself while already out on course.
Kelly takes a discipline-by-discipline approach:
“Helmet on bike, sunnies on my cycling shoes, hat on top of running shoes, gels sorted by when I’m taking them.”
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s reducing decision fatigue when your heart rate is already high.
Race-Day Preparation Starts Before Race Morning
One of the best ways to reduce race stress? Don’t leave things until the last minute.
Steph handles race prep early:
“The day before the day before is my big admin day.”
That means:
- Transition bags packed
- Bike checked
- Nutrition organized
- Kit laid out
- Electronics charged
This gives her time to catch the inevitable “I forgot something” moment before race morning panic sets in.
Kelly’s biggest forgotten item?
Her bike.
Yes, really.
“I have never pulled a faster U-turn in my life.”

Your First Race Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
If there’s one thing both Steph and Kelly reinforce, it’s this: race day is a learning experience.
No setup is ever completely flawless. Something unexpected will probably happen. That’s part of the sport.
Kelly shared one of the biggest realizations from her first 70.3:
“I wish I knew how low stress it was actually going to be once the race started.”
After months of training, race day becomes about trusting the work you’ve already done!
The WYN Behind Race Day
At WYN, we believe performance starts with preparation, but confidence comes from feeling ready for whatever the day brings.
That’s why we design products that support athletes across every discipline:
- Tri suits engineered for comfort and speed
- Storage systems built for long-course racing
- Performance fabrics tested in real race conditions
- Gear created by athletes, for athletes
Because race day is hard enough already. Your gear shouldn’t make it harder.
Whether you’re lining up for your very first sprint triathlon or chasing a PR at your next IRONMAN, the goal is the same: Show up prepared. Trust your training. Enjoy the experience.
And maybe double-check that your bike made it into the car!
